O Lusitano

O Lusitano  is the newest addition to the Dongguan restaurant scene, another fine effort from Miguel of Pizzeria Calzone fame,  and his crew.  Located in the East Town Center area of DongCheng District, the restaurant is about the size of a traditional family style Portuguese restaurant, about 15 tables with a seating capacity of 36, and features a large glass area where the diner can see into the kitchen and watch the chef and his cooks at work.   Miguel says it was a challenge for the cooking staff, as they weren't originally used to working in that sort of atmosphere, but it helps to keep them on their toes so to speak.  The restaurant is decorated as an art gallery with paintings of cities of Portugal from the 14th to the 16th century, as well as Portuguese architecture, Royal porcelains and bowls.  Miguel's goal is  not only to have his guests sample the traditional Portuguese food, but also  as to let those of us who have never had the good fortune to visit Portugal experience a taste of the local culture by visiting the art gallery present through out the restaurant including the additional gallery on the second floor.

Food is traditional Portuguese style, emphasizing freshness of ingredients, and healthy preparation.  Food is mostly baked or roasted, sewed or stuffed, but not fried. Chef Bruno Campota, from the Portuguese Professional chef's Academy of Lisbon uses the best of his imagination to assure a healthier meal with lower calories.   While the menu may not seem extensive at first glance, there is a wide selection of meat, fish and fowl available, as well as several starters and soups.  And to finish an already delicious  meal, there are several of the chef's own desserts, unique to Dongguan.

There are daily specials  with a choice of a Soup of the Day, Starter of the Day, Fish, Meat and a Dessert of the Day. A Unique Menu Selection so that the same Daily Special will not be repeated more than once a month.  Chef Bruno has more than 100 different recipes of Bacalhau (Codfish)  alone that will provide the dinner with a surprising new dish every day.  The idea is to keep the menu fresh, and the specials will rotate so that the specials from one day will not be able to use any ingredients from the previous day.

Prices are moderate for an authentic western style restaurant in Dongguan, with entrees ranging from 48 rmb  up to the mid 88 mb for those entrees involving steak, or in this diner's case a delicious and rather generous piece of grilled salmon.  Also, with O Lusitano  being a part of the Pizzeria Calzone family, you will also be able to accumulate points with your Pizzeria Calzone Privilege Card redeemable for discounts and consumables at both restaurants, which is also a good deal.

The restaurant is located at Huan Cui Ting, 15. East Town Center, Dongcheng.  Phone: (0)769 2233 5646.  Operating hours are from 11:30-15:00 and 18:00-23:00.
